Principal's Message

Mr. Juan Cruz

Rockaway Meadow  Principal

Rockaway Meadow School promotes a nurturing environment that focuses on high expectations for student achievement. We foster a caring atmosphere where staff, students, parents, and the community work in harmony to create an enriching educational program. We stress the importance of mutual respect, acceptance, and appreciation all of our differences and similarities.

Rockaway Meadow School offers programs that are tailored to meet the needs of children in grades K-5. Varied approaches to instruction address the diverse learning styles of our students. Children learn in small and large group settings, and technology is infused throughout the curriculum. Our math program is designed to promote problem solving and critical thinking skills and includes the use of manipulatives and technology. The language arts program provides integrated experiences in the areas of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Our science program emphasizes “hands-on” experiences. The social studies program includes instruction in geography, history, economics, and the social sciences. Specialists in physical education, art, vocal and instrumental music, and media service our students and consistently integrate other disciplines within their instruction. Other services offered include: special education, guidance program with a full time counselor, gifted program (GRO), speech, basic skills, and ESL.

Preparing students to be productive citizens is a priority at Rockaway Meadow. Our students have the opportunity to participate in numerous activities that enhance the curriculum and foster the development of social/emotional growth. Programs include: StudentCouncil, Peacemakers, cultural arts assemblies, altruistic efforts to benefit the community, lunch-time programs, and recreational reading programs.

Parental involvement is a vital component of Rockaway Meadow’s educational program. Parents are actively involved in all aspects of their children’s education. They generously offer their time and energy to serve as school volunteers. Our active PTA funds an enriching cultural arts program, class trips, and other activities that enhance our instructional program.

Our staff members are active learners as they are constantly seeking out ways to grow and learn more about their practice. They participate in a variety of school-based and district-wide committees and engage in an extensive array of professional development opportunities to refine and enhance their teaching skills.
